Prestigious Hunting Art Prize Relocates to Houston

HOUSTON - The Hunting Art Prize, one of Great Britain's most prestigious art competitions, is relocating to Houston after 25 years in the United Kingdom.

Officials of Hunting PLC, a global oil services company, cited a number of factors that contributed to the decision to move the highly regarded art prize.

"We were looking for an opportunity to expand our brand into North America, and concluded there was no place better than Houston," said Dennis Proctor, Chief Executive of Hunting PLC, whose U.S. corporate offices are located in the Bayou City.

"Houston is a true international hub with rich diversity, a vibrant creative community, with a strong tradition of supporting charities - and it's the center of the energy universe. That combination will enable us to not only sustain the caliber of the competition, but to build upon it as well."

The 2006 competition, which is open to artists working in two-dimensional media, includes a substantial prize for the winning entry. Timeline, jury selection, and nominees will be announced this year.

The Hunting Art Prize, created in 1981, has emerged as a top competition in the United Kingdom. The Financial Times has written, "The Hunting has long been established as one of the most consistent and useful of our open-submission prize exhibitions."

According to the British weekly, New Statesman, it's a highly regarded event that has been "outdoing many of its contemporary counterparts such as the Turner Prize."
