More than 900 Sign Up to Participate in Prestigious Hunting Art Prize
HOUSTON— Hunting PLC, an international oil services company, announced today that 910 artists have signed up to compete for the 2007 Hunting Art Prize—a $50,000 award open to amateur, emerging, or established artists based in Texas.
This is the first year that artists statewide have been invited to enter. In 2006, only artists who lived in the Greater Houston Area – where Hunting’s North American headquarters are located – were eligible.
“Our goal in opening up the competition was to ensure a wider range of work from a broader range of artists,” said Dennis Proctor, Chief Executive of Hunting. “We have accomplished that. Our participants include new and unknown artists, professionals with a track record, and everyone in between. ”
The Hunting Art Prize relocated to Houston last year after a quarter century in the United Kingdom, where it emerged as one of the country’s leading arts competitions. Its $50,000 award is among the most generous in the country.
Participating artists submitted one slide of a two-dimensional piece (excluding photography) that will be judged according to a two-tiered jury process.
After a panel has reviewed the slides to ensure compliance with contest rules, the first jury will evaluate the entries and select finalists. Those selected will submit the original artwork representative of their slide to a second jury, which will chose the winning piece. The winner will be announced at a gala in Houston on April 28, 2007.
